Colony of South Carolina. June 30, 1748. Ten Pounds. Fr. SC-61. PCGS About Good-3 Details. Design Redrawn, Rebuilt, Backed, Signatures Redrawn. As illustrated.

Description: Fragile laid paper. Serial No. 624. Signed by John Dart, Branfill Evance, Wm. Pinckney, Will. Cattell, Jun., with other signatures too faded to make out. Printer uncertain. Uniface. 115mm by 95mm. The overall physical condition of this rarity has improved since the Ford offering, thanks to careful curation. It faces up far finer than the grade suggests, but in fairness to all, it is a greatly improved note that has seen reconstructive surgery, so to speak. That does nothing to detract from the great rarity of the note itself. The PCGS qualifiers explain the original note well. Here, the dusky surfaces and the still-bold inking make for a visually pleasing note no matter the grade. The earliest, by a decade or two, South Carolina note in the current sale. “Significant and missing from the majority of Colonial note collections,” wrote the Ford cataloger. Here, then, is an opportunity practically as rare as the note itself!
