Colony of Rhode Island. Warwick. December 2, 1740. Two Shillings and Six Pence or Half A Crown. Fr. RI-38. PCGS Very Fine-20 Details. Severed and Reattached, Restorations. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 4353. Signed by John Dexter, J. Gardner, and Jos. Whipple. Printed by John Coddington. Two-Sided, back countersigned by Caleb Strong and another not quite readable. 80mm by 105mm. To get right to the chase on this rare note, we quote the Ford writer: “A very rare series, and this note is undeniably genuine in our, Mr. Ford’s, and Mr. Newman’s opinions.” You cannot get a better stamp of approval than that in the colonial note field. The ink is still bold on the face, though a trifle faded on the back. The Newman Plate note. An aesthetically appealing “two and six” that has fared well from careful curatorial discipline. Far finer in-hand than the PCGS qualifiers suggest. The cosmetic touch-ups have preserved the integrity of this rarity for future generations, all without hiding or masking the original flaws. A superb note in all regards. This note was one of the most avidly pursued lots in Part III of the Ford sale. Its performance there had broken the five-figure mark when the hammer finally fell. We foresee nothing that will keep this note from a similar performance this time around.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 564. (Ford Price Realized: $12,650)
