Colony of Rhode Island. Providence. June 29, 1775. Five Shillings. Fr. RI-203. PCGS Choice Fine-15 Details. Multiple Repairs, Signature Partially Redrawn. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 381. Signed by Jas. Clarke, John Cole, in red, and Henry Ward. Printed by John Carter. Two-Sided. 75mm by 100mm. Warm pale golden paper offers its innate rough charm to support barely faded black inking. The signatures are likewise crisp, though the Clarke signature appears strengthened. Hole repaired at bottom left face, horizontal center splits on each side curated; we think to the betterment of the note. The last issue of the Act, one of only 2,000 notes produced in the denomination. Of that output, many notes were redeemed, and many suffered heavy attrition in day-to-day commerce. Many “souvenir” colonial notes were put aside by old-timers years after the fact, and they make up the majority of today’s survivors. Most of those notes are tattered and of otherwise lower quality. Then there is a very small number of notes of the caliber offered here. The present piece easily ranks among the finest extant. A nice touch to any current cabinet.
