Colony of Rhode Island. East-Greenwich. March 18, 1776. Forty Shillings. Fr. RI-239. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Edge Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: Thin paper. Serial No. 1214. Signed by Wm. Ellery, signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, Tho. Greene, and Jas. G. Wanton. Printed by John Carter. Two-Sided. 71mm by 110mm. A great note in all regards. The inking is moderately dark on the face, while the back enjoys deep black inking throughout. Evenly margined on the face, tight left margin on verso. Another note that will see spirited bidding activity. An amalgam of type collectors, Rhode Island specialists, and those who avidly pursue “signers” notes will be after this beauty. The presence of William Ellery’s signature adds mystique -- and a goodly dose of history to this offering. He was, after all, a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.

Pedigree: Ex NASCA’s sale of the Maryland Historical Society Collection, May, 1977, Lot 328; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XV, October, 2006, Lot 8681. (Ford Price Realized: $1,840)
