Colony of Rhode Island. East-Greenwich. March 18, 1776. Five Shillings. Fr. RI-235. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Edge Splits and Tears. As illustrated.

Description: Thin paper. Serial No. 2996. Signed by Tho. Greene, in red, John Cole, and Wm. Ellery, signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, in red. Printed by John Carter. Two-Sided. 73mm by 103mm. An appealing note in its own right, physically sound with modestly faded inking, and a note that most collectors will find wholly acceptable. This particular note holds more than collector interest, however, having been signed by William Ellery, a signatory to the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation as noted above. Just 3,000 of this denomination were printed, and most survivors are in lower states of preservation than the present piece. The Ford expert noted: “These are rare and in surveying several catalogs, we did not find any offerings except for the 1977 NASCA Maryland Historical Society Collection Sale…even the 923-lot Affleck-Ball Collection sale did not have one, nor the 1993 James DuPont Collection sale.” A great deal of importance is placed on notes that include signatories to any of the important American documents. Chief among those documents is the Declaration of Independence. Notes with these historic “autographs” demand much attention due to collectors who specialize in these historic snippets. The present writer is thrilled just to hold it in his hand.
