Colony of New-York. October 20, 1739. Five Pounds. Fr. NY-108. PCGS Very Fine-25 Details. Multiple Repairs. As illustrated.

Description: Laid paper. Serial No. 1445. Signed by Will. Roome, Peter Jay, and A. De Peyster. Uniface. Printed by William Bradford. Standard size. A five-pound weight image – a dumbbell with a handle emblazoned “V” -- is part of the imprint to discourage “raising” the value. One of just 400 Five Pound notes printed after the contract had reverted to Bradford. The present note is “likely to be one of the highest-grade notes on the series,” wrote the Ford cataloger. We suspect the note will do well at bidding time; it certainly fared well when offered 19 years ago.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 617. (Ford Price Realized: $1,955)
