Colony of New-York. April 20, 1756. Twenty Shillings or One Pound. Fr. NY-148. PCGS Almost Uncirculated-55 Details. Altered Serial Number. As illustrated.

Description: Thicker coarse paper. Serial No. 1969, altered to 276. Signed by John V. der Spiegel, John Cruger, and R.R. Livingston. Uniface, dark back. Printed by James Parker. Standard size. Anti-raising device of one unmarked dumbbell. It’s Death To Counterfeit This Bill, apostrophe variety. A glorious note that simply improves with every glance. The ink is dark and bright, the paper is crisp, and the centering is likewise superb. Sometime after the Newman photo was taken, this note had its Serial number altered, crudely, and its wide margins were trimmed slightly. Take all that into consideration, and you are still confronted with a beautiful and rare note! The Ford writer considered this a Condition Census example of this rare issue. We do not think the Condition Census has changed much for this note, if at all.

Pedigree: From Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part III, May, 2004, Lot 630. (Ford Price Realized: $3,220)
