Colony of Connecticut in New England. Counterfeit Five Pounds. Fr. CT-8cCF. PCGS Fine-12 Details – Multiple Repairs, Severed, Reattached.

Description: Well-done repairs make it easy to overlook the obvious, especially by specialists in-the-know where this rarity is concerned. As illustrated. Engraved by Timothy Green, then counterfeited by Peter Gardner, who was later arrested but subsequently acquitted of counterfeiting. 115mm by 130mm. Laid paper. Serial No. 1925(?). “Signed” by William Allyn(?), Hezekiah Wyllys, the son of George Wyllys, also a signer of Connecticut notes, and Joseph Talcot, who later served as a major in the Colony’s militia, and was one of the officials charged with detecting and prosecuting counterfeiters. The back was signed over to various people over a few years span, including a signature of the counterfeiter himself! An important note; counterfeits of the issue are rarities, and genuine examples of the issue may well be unknown. All things considered, finding another of these in any grade is a near-monumental challenge, and finding one with the solid overall appearance offered by this specimen is about as difficult as it gets. Despite the PCGS grade qualifiers, the present note rings true in the eye appeal and rarity categories, and will be a focal point in its next surroundings.
