Colony of Connecticut. Four Shillings. Fr. CT-51a. PCGS Very Fine-20 Details – Multiple Repairs, Minor Design Redrawn. As with so many of the notes in this sale, repairs were done skillfully on this note, and the overall appearance of the piece is substantial enough to warrant admiration rather than scorn. As illustrated.

Description: Printed by Timothy Green, “Printer to the Gov. & Comp.” 127mm by 80mm. Sturdy laid paper. Serial No. 1441. Signed by George Wyllys, Nath. Stanly, Assistant Treasurer concerned with counterfeiting and other matters, and Wm. Pitkin, who served in roles like those of Stanly. Newman referred to notes with this horizontal layout as “wide” notes. The back features a specific listing of values for the note: “Four Shillings, in Value equal to Silver, at Eight Shilling, per Ounce Troy Weight (which is Ten-penny Weight) in all Payments and in the Treasury.” The appearance of this note in the Ford sale was the first-ever auction appearance for the note. It has since been held privately for many years, and now it makes another auction appearance for a new group of interested collectors. The rarity of the early Connecticut notes across the board is nothing short of amazing, and this attractive specimen easily ranks high on the rarity scale.
