Collector-Grade 1796 Quarter Dollar. 1796 Draped Bust 25¢ Small Eagle. B-2. Rarity-3. Good-04 PCGS. One of America’s most popular design types, this one-year-only die marriage is high on the want lists of early quarter specialists and advanced type collectors alike. The Small Eagle reverse style is found only on the 6,146 quarters of the date reportedly struck; the next year of coinage in the denomination, 1804, featured the Heraldic or Large Eagle reverse. The present attractive and highly collectable example offers medium silver-gray surfaces with golden-gray highlights throughout. No marks of consequence adorn the obverse when viewed with the naked eye and save for a natural planchet depression in the dentils above the first S of STATES that has toned to deep umber, the reverse is likewise devoid of niggling, eye-catching marks. The obverse dentils, though worn, are complete clockwise from 2 to 11 o’clock, and the reverse dentils are available from 3 o’clock to noon. Some minor marks come to light under low magnification but factor in very little to the overall equation. A choice example - considering the grade - of America’s first quarter dollar coinage. We predict numerous bidders will be interested when this one crosses the auction block!
