City of Charleston. Commissioners of the Loan Office. Undated (1786). Two Pence. Fr. SC-168.1. PCGS Choice Very Fine-35 Details. Repairs, Signature Redrawn, Altered Serial Number. As illustrated.

Description: Thin laid paper. Serial No. 3179, spuriously changed from 11345. Signed by John Webb. Printed by Abernathie, no imprint. Uniface. 75mm by 66mm. Paper moderately toned, border ornaments tight at right and bottom, complete the other two sides. If for nothing else, the bold clipper ship flying the Stars and Stripes at lower left should catch your eye. Newman Plate Note. Serial number altered after the note appeared in Newman. “An extreme rarity,” wrote the Ford specialist, going on to say “We cannot overstress that this and the next note [see the next lot] are major rarities on the South Carolina series, and all Newman-listed private and municipal issues.” An impressive gathering of grade, aesthetics, and rarity.
