City of Charleston. Commissioners of the Loan Office. Undated (1786). Five Shillings & Three Pence. Fr. SC-168.2. PCGS Very Fine-30 Details. Masked Stains. As illustrated.

Description: Thin laid paper with visible circular watermark. Serial No. 4561. Signed by J. Huger and T. Jones. Printed by Abernathie, ABERNATHIE FECIT imprint at bottom. Uniface. 180mm by 81mm. “For all Debts, Duties, Taxes, or Rents.” An exceptional note. Tightly margined at the bottom, less so to the right, large margins left and top. Lightly toned and still-crisp paper with strong imprints. The Newman Plate Note. “Another South Carolina rarity with extreme importance in its corner. We have not seen another like it.” With those words, the Ford cataloger set the stage for bidding that settled nicely in the four-figure range all those years ago. We look forward to the outcome for this rarity in today’s hot marketplace.
