City of Albany. August 28, 1790. Two Pence. Fr. NY-245, Harris H-10. PCGS Choice Fine-15 Details. Repairs, Masking. As illustrated.

Description: Thick laid paper. No Serial number. Signed by E. Willett, Treasurer. Printed by C.R. & G. Webster, Albany. Two-Sided, red face, black back. 72mm by 53mm. Called Rarity-7 (fewer than five known) in Gordon Harris’s research. The well-worn state of this small-change note bears testimony to the extent that it must have circulated among the working class of the city and surrounds. No doubt a Condition Census example, especially given the number of survivors thought to exist. A truly rare note, one that deserves front and center in an advanced New-York or Albany cabinet.

Pedigree: Ex F.C.C. Boyd Estate; Stack’s sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XVII, March, 2007, Lot 4487. (Ford Price Realized: $862.50)
