Choice Mint State 1859-S Liberty Seated Dollar
Probable Condition Census. 1859-S Seated Liberty $1. MS-63 NGC. This steel-gray specimen from the first year of San Francisco Mint coinage in the silver dollar denomination is lustrous throughout and awash with varied rose, blue, and orange-gold iridescence, especially when viewed in a bold light source. Only $20,000 face value – 20,000 coins -- rolled off the presses in San Francisco for this date, and like nearly all Liberty Seated dollars of the era, the 1859-S should be considered a rarity in Choice Mint State as offered here.

The present coin represents one of just a half dozen 1859-S silver dollar grading events listed by NGC at MS-63 or finer; there could be a resubmission in the woodpile in those figures. As noted in the Bowers-Whitman Liberty Seated Silver Coins reference, “15,000 silver dollars of 1859 struck at the San Francisco Mint were specifically minted for export on May 11 of the year. Of these, 8,985 of the dollars were obtained by Bolton, Barren & Co. (shipping merchants located at 92 Merchant Street, corner of Montgomery Street) for the China trade. A further 5,000 were coined in July. Some were distributed on the West Coast, where they remained in circulation for years.” Scarce in all grades and downright rare in Mint State; we expect plenty of bidding activity for this lot.
NGC Census: 5; 1 finer (MS-65).
