This bears an early date of March 19, 1851. It is interesting to note that no Moffat & Co. coin is dated 1851, having been under contract at that time by the U.S. Assay Office to coin gold. Nevertheless they evidently were allowed to continue their gold smelting business. This receipt is for 2,247 pennyweight of gold dust of a fineness of .871. They charged 2 ¾ commission for their services net (not a bad rate for them). This is an extremely rare and historically important Gold Rush receipt from the most reputable of all pioneer coiners. We know of no others! Well worth five figures.
