November 2, 1854. No. 38040. Miner vignette at lower left, depiction of banking office building at top center. Text reads: ORIGINAL vertically at miner’s side, Henry Reed (signed) HAS DEPOSITED WITH US / Three Hundred (signed) DOLLARS / PAYABLE AT OUR OFFICE IN SAN FRANCISCO ON RETURN OF THIS / CERTIFICATE PROPERLY ENDORSED AND DUPLICATE UNPAID, all in fancy script printed type face. The note is signed “For Adams & Co.” by W. Adams – as nearly as we can make out the handwriting. Also endorsed on the back, though that signature betrays our inability to decipher it. Rare and important for California specialists and Gold Rush-era collectors alike.
