California. San Francisco. 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition SC$1. Exposition City. HK-418a. Gilt Bronze. Plain Edge. Medal Turn. 35 mm. MS-62 NGC. Obv: seated female figure left with branch and bear looks out over cityscape, 1915 / SAN FRANCISCO / THE / EXPOSITION CITY on ground beneath figure. Rev: two nude female figures frolic with North and South American continents forming the backdrop, one female in the Atlantic Ocean, the other in the Pacific, passing a wreath across the Isthmus of Panama, curved ribbon below with COMMEMORATING THE OPENING OF THE PANAMA CANAL emblazoned, tiny A P STARK COPYRIGHTED inverted at top of rim. The softly lustrous deep honey gold surfaces glow with inner warmth. Low magnification reveals a few tiny thin spots in the gilt layer, but the eye appeal is still substantial for this scarce issue.
Curiously, a tiny 14K is punched into the field just after the word CITY in the obverse design, once lightly, and then again boldly; we also note a tiny stamped 14 on the obverse rim at 6 o’clock.
