California. San Francisco. 1902 Wells Fargo Semi-Centennial. HK-296. Silver. Plain Edge. Coin Turn. 38 mm. MS-65 NGC. Obv: WELLS FARGO & COMPANY on rim-to-rim ribbon just below center, stagecoach scene above ribbon with ruffian in woods in gun exchange with shotgun rider, galloping horse with seated messenger firing rifle at standing Native American with bow and arrow below ribbon. Rev: steamship, factories, and power line at top, train to left with boxcar marked WELLS FARGO AND COMPANY EXPRESS in tiny letters below, banner marked 1852 on left end, MARCH 18TH at center fold, and 1902 on right end, baroque shield below with quill pens and notary stamp upper left, crossed keys upper right, above label with EXPRESS AND BANKING, clenched fist with lightning bolts below label, FIDELITY curves at bottom rim. The present beauty deserves the Gem classification, and viewer’s will be hard-pressed to fin a blemish of any significance. The frosty and nearly mattelike silver-gray surfaces feature well-struck motifs embellished by rich slate-gray in the recessed design areas. We have no doubt this piece is among the finest surviving specimens of this popular Gold Rush-related issue, one that recalls the early days of California and the firm that helped to make it all happen.
