Title: Bronze Collar, Huge Katanga Cross
Description: The Bateke people, who lived near Leopoldville, made crenellated ("machicolated") collars of bronze, ornamented with geometric designs (Quiggin, p. 76, though she reported that their claim to be classed as currency was "doubtful"). The collar is paired with a huge, old Katanga cross 11" long. See Opitz, p. 115 (this piece illustrated p. 116) and 124. In 1907, three to five Katanga crosses would purchase a male slave.
