Description: Satiny and nearly cameo PL, and probably an example from a hoard of PL gem-like examples of the date dispersed in the late 20th Century. Absolutely impressive in visual stature, with lively silver-gold surfaces that display bold design motifs and exquisite eye appeal for the type. (It wouldn’t surprise this writer to find the hoard coins mentioned previously were struck as some sort of presentation or award pieces, especially if they all were as sharp and pristine as this coin.) Doubled profile, hair line to neck line. Tied for finest certified of the date at PCGS! Finer quality than this seldom enters the 18th-century coinage market, especially in the early Bust 8 reales discipline. The PCGS site notes a population of 30 Mint State examples of this issue. Of those, 25 are of slightly lesser quality, and this piece has company at the top of the ladder which accounts for the other five pieces. We can’t help but wonder whether any of the other pieces seen by PCGS were hoard coins of similar appearance?
PCGS Population: 5; none finer.
