August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-19. Rarity-5. With 140 G., 20 Distant. Plain Edge. MS-61 PCGS.
This bright and satiny deep yellow gold specimen displays a sheen of faint gray-gold in a bold light source. The fields are partly reflective and other than some readily visible hairlines, the viewer will be hard-pressed to find a mark of moment anywhere. On the obverse, the As in CAROLINA have crossbars while the As in AUGUST and CARATS have no crossbars. The 4 in the date and in 140 G. are from the same numeral punch and without a crossbar. Though called Rarity-5 – and there certainly are enough circulated examples around to warrant the distinction – Mint State coins are of a highly elusive nature. If all the known Mint State examples of the variety were assembled in one place, specialists would only have two PCGS-certified examples of Kagin-19 to choose from, including the present coin. Both PCGS coins are called MS-61. While we can’t speak directly on the quality of the other MS-61 example of K-19, we can state that this thoroughly attractive coin is available here and now, and not in some “if” situation. After the successful sale of the Allan specimen, it could be many years before this or another Uncirculated K-19 comes up for grabs. Advanced specialists are no doubt planning their bidding strategy as you read this, so be prepared at “show time.”
