August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-19. Rarity-5. With 140 G., 20 Distant. Plain Edge. Double Struck. EF-45 PCGS.
This deep golden specimen offers engaging olive and sunset orange toning highlights throughout. Some light hairlines are noted on both sides but the only mark of consequence was in the planchet at the R in DOLLARS when struck. A pleasing bit of retained luster glows throughout and the eye appeal is superb for the assigned grade. Boldly double struck with evidence plainly seen at the peripheral legend on both sides. This is not die chatter or any such thing – this is a double-struck coin with perhaps a letter’s width in the legends between the now-flattened first and bold second strikes. For instance, GOLD reads GGOOLLDD! We know of no other double-struck Bechtler issue in our almost half century of study, and this could be the only double-struck pioneer or private gold coin from any issuer! One thing we all can be certain of is that this amazing pioneer half eagle will bring a bold round of spirited bidding activity when the specialists queue up for their shot at this Bechtler $5 rarity.
