August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-18. Rarity-6+. With 140 G. Plain Edge. AU-53 PCGS.
This smoky deep orange-gold specimen is richly imbued with deep violet and electric rose iridescence when viewed in a bold light source. Though numerous hairlines can be seen under low magnification, no marks of any serious nature can be found. We do note some planchet adjustment file mark at the reverse rim from 4 to 6 o’clock, put there exactingly to be certain the planchet measured up to the new 1834 U.S. standards for weight. No Mint State example of K-18 have been certified, and the present coin is the second finest certified by PCGS. Whether for type purposes or cabinet completion efforts, you may not have this opportunity again in the foreseeable future. If an example of Kagin-18 is on your want list-wish list we suggest you “go for it” now -- we wouldn’t want you to regret it later!
