August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-17a. Rarity-8, Unique. With 140 G, No Beads. Finely Reeded Edge. AU-58 PCGS.
This intensely lustrous pale yellow gold Bechtler $5 represents a double-delight for our bidders. Not only are the surfaces of this attractive coin visually appealing, the coin itself is unique; what better combination is there than quality and rarity? Other than assorted hairlines, no major marks assail the viewer’s eye without a detailed study. The fields are chiefly reflective and add measurably to the overall eye appeal. The high rims are marked in very few places though not heavily and best seen with a loupe. Indeed, the only marks of mention are some faint old contemporary scratches near the A in DOLLARS. As in several other Bechtler dies of various denominations, the A punch in the legends is apparently an inverted V. This is easily one of the most important coins – some might argue the most important – in the Allan Collection, and bidding will be fast and furious when this lot comes up for bidding. We expect all eyes will be on this prize before it is hammered home to its new cabinet.
