August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-17. Rarity-5. With 140 G, No Beads. Plain Edge. EF-45 PCGS. CAC.
The present specimen is medium yellow gold with trace olive highlights throughout. Though modestly circulated, the only naked-eye mark is a small scratch at the D in RUTHERFORD, though a loupe, of course, pulls forth numerous tiny contact marks as typically encountered and as should be expected for the grade. We note here that PCGS has certified just one Mint State example of this otherwise available variety. This amply pleasing example of K-17 would make an exceptional addition to a mid-grade pioneer gold set or type collection.
