August 1, 1834. C. Bechtler $5 Gold. Kagin-17. Rarity-5. With 140 G, No Beads. Plain Edge. AU-58 PCGS. CAC.
This bright and reflective yellow gold specimen exhibits warm orange and olive iridescence in a bold light source. Other than some pocket-change hairlines, the surfaces are devoid of marks of consequence, even when viewed under low magnification. Additionally, the rims are high and strong and without dents or disturbances. With its Rarity-5 rating, K-17 is one of the more available varieties of Bechtler coinage. Most of the known and certified examples are not quite so fine as the Allan coin offered here, and only three are finer in the eyes of PCGS. We can’t speak for the other AU-58 examples of the variety, but we can and will speak here by suggesting this is readily one of the finest examples of Kagin-17 extant today. Whether for type purposes or a beginning comprehensive collection, bidders will do well to contemplate this lot.
