Title: Ambassador, Lewis & Clark Beads
Description: Ambassador beads were so-called by the Ndebele Tribe because their shamans wore them when they went into the hills to seek advice from the Great God of the Matabele. When David Livingstone visited Victoria Falls in 1855, he was greeted by native chiefs wearing ambassador beads. This lot has such an ambassador bead. See Opitz, p. 39. And in Mali, ornate so-called "Lewis & Clark" beads, with striking floral designs, are found; see Opitz, pp. 55-56. Three such "Lewis & Clark" beads are also included.
