Title: African Coiled and Copper Bar Money
Description: Nigeria, rare coiled Manilla; see Opitz pp 209-15. The word “manilla,” meaning bracelet, is seemingly of Iberian origin, ultimately derived from either the Low Latin manilia or the Catalan manilla (diminutive of ma, hand); the early Portuguese form is manellio. The form of the manilla—an open bracelet, somewhat horseshoe-shaped, with flared ends—however, is apparently of African origin. They were an important form of money in West Africa from the 15th century to 1948. Coiled manillas are scarce. See Opitz pp 209-5. Also, Katanga, Mukuba Wa Matwi copper Bar, Opitz p. 232. 2 pcs.
