Header: ARGUABLY TIED FOR FINEST KNOWN RUSSIAN-AMERICAN COMPANY 50 KOPECKS NOTE
Title: 50 KOPECKS (1842-1858) Kardakoff 53.1 PMG VERY CHOICE-63 Serial # 11686
Description: Rectangular with neatly clipped but slightly different sized top two corners. 53 mm X 62 mm. A simply incredible specimen of not only this denomination but of all the Russian-American Company “Walrus Skin” notes. Strong bold inking both sides on gorgeous bright white creamy parchment. Virtually as made with just the barest evidence of handling.
The face is superb with the company seal using a double headed Imperial Russian eagle within an oval frame, legend in Russian translated UNDER THE HIGH PATRONAGE OF HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY. The denomination in words below the seal; the images and letters bolder than any other known specimens and the creamy white paper as bright as any we have seen!
The back has a finely engraved oval protector with spiral details with the Russian legend translated NOTE IN AMERICA with the denomination “50 KOP” below. The serial number frame with “No” is at the bottom of the oval, outlined to allow the exceptionally bold hand written serial number to be written in. The signature is barely visible.
The highest independently graded Walrus Skin note, the 50 Kopeks PMG very choice-64 EPQ specimen sold for $66,000 in the 1/13/20 Heritage Auction. Although overall that note may be slightly finer, in some respects, we like this note better.
