Title: 4-Star Obverse, Choice Uncirculated
Description: 1853 octagonal ¼ Dollar, BG-102, Die State III (rusty dies), PCGS MS63, issued by Frontier, Deviercy & Co., successor to Joseph Brothers’ coining business in 1853. Born in Tournus, Saône-et-Loire, France, Oct. 30, 1827, Pierre Frontier apparently came to America together with Eugene Deviercy while both were in their early 20s. They formed a jewelry business in San Francisco in 1853 (they are absent from the two 1852 San Francisco city directories, but appear in the February 1854 directory), which was one of the most prolific issuers of small California gold. Like many another ‘49er, these men tried their hand at something they had never done before, and while the results were often amateurish and blundered, they soldiered on, eventually attaining acceptable quality. Their pioneering efforts attest to the indifference of their early customers to the niceties of small change. This piece, one of their better efforts, marries their rather crude large head obverse with just 4 stars with the same reverse used by Joseph Brothers for BG-101, now rusted. Choice Brilliant Uncirculated, bright gold color. PCGS MS63 William C. O'Connor Collection (PCGS# 10371).
