Header: 1844 WAILUKU FEMALE SEMINARY WITH EDWARD BAILEY COUNTERSTAMP
Title: 2PE-6 HAWAII, WAILUKU 1844 1 HAPAUMI Counter-stamped note. PMG-35.
Description: Well centered with a number of areas of circulation, one center fold and a couple of small thin spots. Fairly well centered although the lower right corner cut a bit diagonally but not close to the stamping.
Essentially this is the same note as above but counter-stamped in black, “Edward Bailey”.
According to Don Medcalf and Ronald Russell in their book, Hawaiian Money, Edgar Bailey was a genius of numerous accomplishments as mathematician, farmer, linguist, engineer, musician, builder, administrator, teacher and botanist. Bailey ventured into the manufacturing of sugar at Wailuku which later merged into the Wailuku Sugar Plantation and Haiku Sugar Co. in Haiku, Maui.
It is unknown how many of these notes Bailey counter-stamped, but there are only a few known specimens including the Ostheimer Collection specimen which is of similar quality.
