A toned uncirculated 1938 Nickel that is accompanied by a cardboard holder that states, "To Eugene S. Duffield of the Treasury Department. This "Jefferson Nickel" is from the first bag delievered to the United States Treasury by the Bureau of the Mint. Cordially, H. Morganthau, Jr. " (signed) November 15, 1938. Duffield served with the Wall Street Journal's Washington Bureau from 1935 to 1938, before serving as an assistant to the Secretaryy of the Treasury, and the assistant to the Under Secretary of the Navy from 1938 tp 1940. Henry Morganthau, Jr. served as the Secretary of the Treasury under the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He played a majorrole in designing and financing United States participation in World War II. Only two other nickels are known in these very rare original cardboard holders, both of which reside in the FDR Presidential Library and Museum. A historic and highly collectible piece of 20th century numismatics.
