The frosty honey-gold surfaces of this scarce double eagle are aglow with strong cartwheel activity and lively rose iridescence, a winning combination that brings out the best of the coin and the grade. This scarce Denver Mint double eagle, though not rare in the strictest sense, it is certainly far more elusive than its lofty mintage of nearly 3.1 million pieces suggests. Like so many other dates in the design type, especially the branch mint issues, relatively few examples of this date ever saw more than a canvas bag, a storage vault, and in some cases, a melting pot that was often located in Europe. Indeed, we owe it to American coin dealers of 60 and more years ago for expatriating many previously rare dates to America in numbers not known before; many dates, though rare like the 1924-D, became somewhat more available to thanks to the European banks. Choice for the grade and ideally suited to an advanced type set or a rapidly growing Saint-Gaudens double eagle collection.
