Warm golden halos engage the rim on both sides of this sharp though lightly circulated specimen. Much luster is retained, especially in the protected design areas. Few marks of any description can be found, a definite plus at the AU level. Despite having the largest press run of any of the three 1921-dated half dollar scarcities – 584,000 pieces – the 1921-S is the big boy on the block among key dates in the series. Indeed, at EF and finer the value increases dramatically beyond that of the other two dates in question. Surprisingly, only 19 AU-58 grading events are listed by PCGS for the date! Today’s pricing guides reveal an AU-58 example of the date at the low five-figure level and the value escalates from there once Mint State is reached. There is no “shame” attached to the ownership of a beautiful AU example of this rarity, and we expect the bidding for this lot will prove our point admirably.

After 1921 the production of half dollars in the United States was a hit-or-miss proposition at best. Only five calendar years between 1921 and 1934 saw any half dollar coinage at all, and all of the coins produced in those years were done so solely at the branch mints. Beginning in 1934, all three mints began active production of the denomination once again.
