Here is a satiny beauty by any standards. The silver-grey surfaces of this lustrous nickel swirl with pale pastel sky blue iridescence throughout. The strike epitomizes designer James Earle Fraser’s all-American design type, and all the tiny design elements are prominently displayed. From a Proof mintage for this first-year-of-issue and first design type of the year of 1,520, the largest such production run of the series, 1913-1916; certainly, some non-numismatic types may have purchased a nice Proof example of the new nickel type, especially if they were local to Philadelphia. An impressive Proof by any standards.
