Header: Superb Gem Matte Proof 1911 $2.50
Description: Sometimes called Sand Blast Finish. Rich khaki-gold surfaces offer the innate lustrous glow these oddly finished pieces are famous for. Close-in examination reveals myriad tiny dots of light, countless in number and an intricate part of the appeal of these specialized coins. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when the Mint produced the Matte Proofs, 1908-1915, the beholders weren’t buying. True, purists bought the coins with the new-fangled finish from the Mint, but the unpopularity was such that they never caught on and were discontinued in the quarter eagle series after the 1915 issue. It is believed today that many of the Matte Proofs of this era went unsold and were later melted. Here in the 21st Century, these little Mint experimental-finish coins are avidly sought and collected, especially when a piece such as this graces the pages of an auction catalog. Don’t be left out at bidding time!
