The first impression is of a copper-nickel Indian cent of 1859-1864 – until you glance at the date and the numismatic wheels begin to spin. This modestly circulated 1890 pattern cent was no doubt plucked from circulation generations ago by an astute collector and has survived for today’s Indian cent specialists to appreciate. Probably struck on a random world coin or medallet planchet. The uspatterns.com website suggests that three examples of Judd-1758 are known. The combined tally for NGC and PCGS is four examples of J-1758, all of different grades, see below. No matter the number known, there is no question as to the variety’s rarity. We expect the present specimen will see spirited bidding pressure from Indian cent specialists and pattern aficionados alike.
NGC Census: 1; 1 finer (MS-63). PCGS: 1 at Fine-15; one finer at MS-64.
