Here is a Mint State 1883-S Morgan dollar that will prove well worth the time and effort to study. Fully brilliant, sharply struck, and highly lustrous, this specimen of this semi-key date makes us wonder just when MS-62 ends and MS-63 begins; the reverse is easily a point -- or more -- finer than the obverse, and the obverse was the cause of the MS-62 vs MS-63 comment in the first place. We’ll call this one “on the cusp” and let the viewer decide. Though 6.25 million examples of the date were struck, the 1883-S Morgan has proven itself to be a challenge to collectors seeking Mint State examples. Much of the mintage was released into general circulation, and the fresh Uncirculated examples of the date in today’s – or even yesterday’s – marketplace are not readily found. Impressive for the date and grade at every turn; it will take more than good intentions to bring this coin home. PCGS #7148
