1883 Hawaii Dollar. Akahi Dala. Medcalf-Fong C4A, KM-7. MS-65 PCGS. CAC.
This lovely gem Hawaii dollar is frosty and lustrous throughout. The surfaces are richly toned, the obverse in deep shades of silver gray with peach highlights throughout, the reverse with a golden steel-gray appearance that exhibits bolder touches of rose, crimson, and blue iridescence. Struck in San Francisco for the Kingdom of Hawaii, the four circulating silver denominations – dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar – saw much duty in commerce to the point that evenly circulated examples are the norm for the issue today. Of the 500,000 dollar pieces struck, some 453,000+ pieces were reportedly recalled and subsequently melted when Hawaii became a U.S. Territory in 1900. The focal objects of each denomination are the portrait, right, of King Kalakaua, and the reverse Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Gems such as offered here are fairly limited in distribution. Not too far off “as nice as they come” status and certain to entertain numerous bids.
