1878-S Trade Dollar. MS-62 PCGS. CAC.
This satiny specimen exhibits robust cartwheel activity on both sides with the obverse luster swirling through a pale pastel blend of peach and sky blue iridescence that fills every nook and cranny; the reverse toning is more silver-gold throughout. Some slight toning flecks are noted near the eagle’s head and left wing. Beginning in 1879, no branch mint trade dollar coinage would be forthcoming; only Proofs would be struck, and only at Philadelphia through the demise of the type in 1883. Though some light marks are visible beneath the colorful toning array, this is still a visually pleasing example of the date and grade combination – just ask CAC!

PCGS Population: Some 420+ examples of the date have been certified as MS-62 or finer; the finest is a solitary MS-68 example.
