1877-S Large S. MS-65 PCGS.
This boldly lustrous and delightfully toned Gem Mint State trade dollar is a visual treat in every sense of the word. The cartwheel activity is sensational, which in turn highlights the satiny near-reflective fields and faintly frosted central devices. The strike is crisp for the date and design type with essentially full design elements throughout. Lest we forget, both sides enjoy a sheen of varied pastel elegance; pale orange-gold and electric blue on the obverse, with the reverse a lively display of satiny peach-gold iridescence throughout. Once the MS-65 plateau is reached for tis otherwise plentiful date, the certified population thins somewhat dramatically as witnessed below. As with just about any other series of U.S. coins, gem quality is difficult to locate in the trade dollar discipline for most dates, even the so-called “common” dates. Here is an opportunity for experienced specialists and new enthusiasts alike to obtain a condition rarity within the series; here, too, is where the bidding competition reaches new heights.

PCGS Population: 33; 8 finer (MS-67 finest).
