1876-S Type I/I. Large S. MS-63 (PCGS).
This specimen is even champagne-silver on the obverse with luster there that seemingly glows from within; in contrast, the reverse exhibits broadly sweeping cartwheels with splashes of medium silver gray here and there. A hint of striking weakness is noted at Liberty’s hair and the star adjacent to her hair bun, and a distinctive die chip is noted in Liberty’s lap. As is sometimes seen in the trade dollar series, the horizontal rolling marks on the strip the planchet was taken from were not erased when the coin was struck. This frosty specimen could easily adorn a type collection or trade dollar cabinet, and we imagine it will be well-received by its next steward.

PCGS Population: Some 280 examples of the date have been certified as MS-63 or finer; the finest is a solitary MS-66 coin.
