1876-CC Doubled Die Reverse. Type I/I. FS-801. MS-62 NGC. CAC.
This bright and lustrous specimen is a pleasure to behold. The broadly sweeping cartwheel activity and the satiny fields combine in an aesthetic measure that goes beyond the assigned grade – this coin is definitely choice for the MS-62 assignment. Surface marks are at a minimum here, especially to the unaided eye. This remarkable variety was first uncovered by coin dealer Jack Beymer prior to 1988 when it was defined in Breen’s Encyclopedia. Close-in examination of the reverse shows distinct doubling at the berry beneath the talons (Type I style) and the olive branch that extends to the viewer’s right; other traces of doubling are seen at the eagle’s neck and beak area. This specimen is tied for finest example of FS-801 certified by NGC among the 35 grading events for the variety notated thus far by the firm. We think this coin is a winner for the grade and date combination -- as does CAC -- and a sure-fire contender for finest known as well. It’s up to you, the bidder, to decide whether this beauty goes home with you or with someone else.

NGC Census: 3; none finer within the FS-801 designation.
