This satiny and lustrous double-dime offers wisps of pale blue, crimson, gold, and violet iridescence, particularly on the reverse. The strike is strong save for some trivial weakness at the very top of the obverse in Liberty’s hair and at star 8. Perhaps the oddest denomination contrived at the Mint and, though one of the shortest-lived series in Mint history, a twenty-cent piece is still mandatory for type collectors. Virtually all collectors rely on the 1875-S date for collecting purposes; all the other dates – six of them including branch mint issues -- are scarce to extremely rare. This is the variety with a squiggle in the dentils immediately below and slightly left of the 7 in the date, either a random die line or the top of an errant 7; the verdict has yet to be agreed upon. Choice for the grade. PCGS #5298
