1874-S Faint Mintmark. AU-58 NGC.
This impressively lustrous rose-orange specimen resembles a Philadelphia issue at first glance owing to the faint, small mintmark. Plenty of mint bloom remains in the protected areas, but despite some apparent small ticks on both sides, the aesthetic appeal here is high. Of the 16,000 examples of the date produced, virtually every example must have circulated – we’ve yet to hear of a Mint State specimen, certified or not, but numismatics takes strange twists and turns. The strike is clear with a trace of circulation showing on the high points. Still, the present specimen is an aesthetically appealing example of a rare prize among the dates in the San Francisco half eagle catalog. Another rare date that will entice specialists, and a lot worth following from start to finish at bidding time.
