1873 Trade Dollar. Breen-5779, Broken Serifs. MS-64 NGC.
This satiny pale steel gray specimen is afire with cartwheel luster and vivid pastel toning highlights; the reverse is modestly prooflike in appearance. Bursts of neon blue, pale peach, and rich rose engage the eye, especially so in a bright light. The strike is sharp throughout with only some trifling weakness seen in Miss Liberty’s tresses and at the eagle’s sinister leg bands. E in UNITED and STATES, and F in OF broken at top. Finally struck on July 11, 1873 after much discourse in congress, trade dollars were meant to compete with the ever-present Spanish-American peso or 8 reales in the Orient Trade, especially in China where American merchants without Spanish-American coins were at a financial disadvantage. Nearly all of the circulation strike trade dollars struck in 1873, no matter from Philadelphia, San Francisco, or Carson City, saw some sort of service in the Far East; 1873-dated trade dollars with merchant chop marks are commonplace from all three mints.

As for Mint State 1873 trade dollars, the term “commonplace” couldn’t be any farther from the truth. Though not great rarities, nice high-grade 1873 trade dollars such as offered here are in a distinct minority, and no doubt most of them survive by chance and not design. The present coin will make a great addition to a 19th century type set or a trade dollar collection of any caliber, so bid accordingly.
