1870-S Fortin-101. MS-66 PCGS.
Here is a splendid gem survivor from a mintage of only 50,000 pieces, or put another way, just $5,000 face value. The frosty pale silver surfaces enjoy a dusting of faint powder blue throughout. The strike is sharp, especially so in the reverse wreath. We note an obverse area of deeper toning at the rim at 7 o’clock, and another such area at the reverse rim at 11 o’clock. Specialist Gerry Fortin gives this date a Rarity-6+ rating in Mint State at his seateddimevarieties.com website. One of five PCGS certification events for the date at the MS-66 level; we can’t help but wonder whether that figure represents five different coins. A nice opportunity for an advanced Liberty Seated dime specialist.

PCGS Population: 5; none finer.
