1870 Pattern Standard Dollar. Judd-999. Rarity-6. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-65 BN NGC.
Obverse: William Barber’s seated Liberty left, plain band around head, olive branch hangs in left hand, right hand rests on shield, ribbon reads LIBERTY, liberty pole with Phrygian cap in background, 13 stars around, date below. Reverse: Wreath of corn, cotton, wheat, and rice tied at bottom, open at top, small STANDARD at top rim, 1 at center, DOLLAR curves below. This attractive pattern dollar is deep golden tan throughout with a wealth of rose and blue iridescence that springs to life in a bright light. The strike is crisp throughout and the eye appeal easily measures up to the rigors of the grade. The present example of J-999 is the second-finest example certified by NGC within any color designation; it is exceeded in grade by a solitary Proof-66 RB specimen in their Census.

The uspatterns.com website notes that this pattern style was struck in silver, J-996 and J-997; copper, J-998 and J-999; and aluminum, J-1000 and J-1001. The “even” Judd numbers in this group represent the style with reeded edge details while the “odd” numbers represent the plain edge style. Complete sets of the six Standard Dollar varieties were reportedly sold at the Mint in Philadelphia in the year of issue, but the cost of a complete six-piece set is not known to us. We do know, however, that Gem Proof pattern dollars are a delicacy that draw many potential bidders to the table at auction time. In this instance, the best-prepared among them will take home this exceptional dollar pattern.

NGC Census: 1; none finer within the BN designation. We note a Proof-66 RB specimen, the only J-999 finer than the presently offered piece on the NGC roster.
