Medium steel-gray with lighter white-grey highlights throughout. A pair of soft rim bruises are noted, both possibly the result of striking. The date, 1868, is impressed in retrograde (backwards) position in the obverse field at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. Dramatically double-struck with the reverse Roman numeral’s first impression 45 degrees offset from the second and dominant strike. Called “believed to be unique” at the uspatterns.com website. This would make for a handsome threesome if a bidder is fortunate enough to capture all three Merriam “patterns” offered in this sale.
