Title: 1865 Pattern 1¢. Judd-406, Pollock-476. Rarity-Low 6. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-64 NGC
Header: Satiny Proof 1865 Pattern Indian 1¢
Description: Dies as illustrated. Repunched 18 in date. Tip of bust even with flag of 1 – the tip extends beyond the numeral on P-475. A frosty pale golden specimen with a whisper of rose iridescence on the satiny fields and frosty motifs. The strike is bold throughout, down to the tiniest of details. There is a natural planchet crack, as struck, on the reverse from the N in CENT to the lowest arrow shaft. According to information gleaned at uspatterns.com, “these are so-called regular dies trial pieces, but most of these off-metal coins were deliberately struck for sale to collectors, often as part of complete sets.” The present beauty is among the finest examples of Judd-406 seen to date by NGC, and worthy of more than just a casual flirtation with your bidder paddle.
NGC Census: 1; 4 finer within the designation (Proof-66 finest).
